Bolivian toymaker restores limbs with 3D prosthetics

As a kid growing up in poverty in rural Bolivia, Roly Mamani built his own toys. Now a 34-year-old engineer, he 3D prints limbs for Indigenous compatriots scarred by life-changing accidents. One of their beneficiaries is 59-year-old Pablo Matha, who lost his vision and right hand seven years ago in a mining accident involving dynamite. Matha says the prosthesis "is a great gift." He now plays the guitar to earn a living.
Spinal implant allows Parkinson's patient to walk again

A man severely disabled by Parkinson's disease is able to walk almost normally again thanks to electrodes implanted in his spinal cord. The medical first was achieved by Swiss researchers who had previously pioneered similar breakthroughs to help paraplegic people walk again.

Junior doctors working in England public health service have begun a four-day walkout, in what has been billed as the most disruptive strike in its history, calling for pay rises and better working conditions. Up to a quarter of a million appointments could be postponed, according to the National Health Service Confederation.
Peruvian cemetery fumigated amid dengue outbreak

Workers from Peru's Ministry of Health fumigate El Sauce cemetery in Lima after the country declared a "health emergency" in 13 departments due to a dengue outbreak. "It's important to attack the spread of this mosquito" explains Martin Ramos Hidalgo, a biologist at the Health Ministry, as workers search for larvae in bags of water under flowers left in the cemetery. Peru has, so far in 2023, recorded more than 11,500 cases of dengue and 16 deaths as a result of the disease. The numbers represent a 72% increase from the same period in 2022.
